Welcome to our Youth Department
Encourage early literacy
Some early literacy tips from our Children’s Librarian, Mrs. Thompson: “You can be your child’s most important teacher!” Here are activities you can do with your child to help them develop early language skills.
Read
Read together every day, even if it is only for a few minutes. The earlier you start introducing books and making a routine of reading, the better. Find a book your child loves and read it over and over! Children find comfort in repetition.
Talk
Talk throughout the day to your child. Describe to them what you are seeing and doing.
Sing
Sing songs and nursery rhymes! Rhymes help your child learn new words and develop listening and memory skills.
Write
It begins with scribbling! Keep crayons and paper on a table where your child can practice.
Play
Have fun together! Playing is how children discover, explore and understand the world and their place in it.
