Bringing our East Granby Community together

The East Granby Public Library aims to support our community by providing accessible and friendly service to all who walk through our doors. We offer a selection of over 35,000 books and foster connections by hosting events like book clubs and baseball night, and programs with topics ranging from finance to animals to wig building. With spaces ranging from our beautiful outdoor patio, to conference rooms, to conversation areas, we offer many options for our patrons to connect.

Our mission

The East Granby Public Library is a friendly, welcoming, gathering spot that offers materials, services, programs, and cultural events to meet the personal, professional, educational, social, and civic needs of the community.

Who we are

East Granby Public Library is an independent, 501(c)3 non-profit library association serving our East Granby community andsurrounding towns.

History of the Library

During colonial times individuals had been good enough to keep the town's collection of circulating books in their homes. In 1920, a collection of 80 books from the Connecticut circulating library were sent to the Congregational Church where they were placed on shelves in the church balcony. A group of 6 townspeople met in 1922 to form the East Granby Library Association. Nearly 3,500 books were moved from the parsonage to the church in May 1938. The library opened for only two hours each week, on Saturday afternoon.

Picture

The library acquired a more central location in November 1942, when it moved into the vacated town hall on School Street, which had begun its existence as Center School.  The library moved again in May 1967 to 27 School Street.  The library expanded its hours considerably and had a permanent collection of 15,000 books. A generous donation from the Seymour family for a new library building was the impetus for forming a committee to raise capital funds.  After ten years and a lot of determination, the dream of a new library became a reality.  In September 2001, the library moved into its new home at 24 Center Street. The community formed a book brigade to move the first 100 books to the new library. We are nestled on a small hill with the view of a pond on one side and the community center and town hall on the other.

Location

The Library is nestled in the heart of East Granby. When traveling on Memorial Drive, you can find the library on Center Street, up the hill from the Mary Ellen Brown Senior/Community Center and the Police Station. While visiting the library, enjoy a walk on Doreen's Nature Trail and explore the current picture book displayed in our Story Trail.
